It is almost the same to work with as mdf but alot heavier.

The layers of inner plies are about 1 mm thick solid birch veneer cross banded and laminated with strong adhesive.
Popular for its rich density and rigidity this wood type is also the best wood for a speaker box since it facilitates better clarity and tone.
Another great thing about birch is it will always have less saw dust.
I ve built horn loaded speakers using 1 2 baltic birch for the inner box then covered it with solid wood overbox and silicone between the 2 layers to allow some wood movement.

The birch will be more expensive but will last longer in the big picture.
It is void free 13 layer 3 4 often in 5 x 5 sheets though sometimes 4 x 8.
If mdf isn t available and you need to look for another option the baltic birch plywood is the next best thing you can get.

The mdf is more prone to mold and mildew not an issue if you seal with an oil based paint though and the dust particles are smaller than the birch making it more prone to inhalation while working with it.
You can build speakers with whatever you like.
As far as i could tell when using it it had about the same strength as mdf.
